Razz & HORSE

The 'R' in H.O.R.S.E.

HORSE poker is a mixed poker game and consists of five different games and played in this order: limit Hold'em, limit Omaha Hi/Lo (Eight or Better) , Razz, 7 Card Stud High, and 7 Card Stud Eight or Better; hence the acronym H.O.R.S.E. Each game is played for the same set amount of time for each round. HORSE can be played in ring games, tournaments and sit n go tournaments (mostly, if not all online).

The game HORSE is growing more popular each year. The appeal for the game is the variety it offers, and for some players it breaks the monotony of playing the same game over and over. Are you tired of Texas Hold'em yet? The *World Series of Poker (WSOP) offers a $50,000 event that some say, is the true competition to determine a world poker champion. It's not hard to disagree with that because a player needs to be a fairly well rounded player in each poker game discipline and not just a "Hold'em" champion. But the truth of the matter is most HORSE players, even good poker players, try to just get by in the Razz rounds. They either play the Razz rounds safe or lose too many hands trying to chase cards or make bad decisions.

HORSE can be a profitable game for certain game specialists, in particular 7 Card Stud High, 7 Card Stud 8 or better, and Razz. Razz I believe is the game where one can get a good advantage over many HORSE players because Razz, out of the five games in HORSE is played the least. Specializing in 7 Card Stud Eight or Better would be right behind Razz because 7 Card Stud Eight or Better shares many traits to that of Razz. To further show you how "unpopular" Razz is there is even a game of HORSE without Razz! This game is called H.O.S.E., which consists of: limit Hold'em, limit Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud High, and 7 Card Stud Eight or Better. But still, HOSE is not nearly as popular as HORSE is.

Advantage Razz

Assuming that you are a decent poker player in limit Hold'em, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud High, and 7 Card Stud Eight or Better, but are not very well versed in Razz, then why not become a good Razz player and start taking advantage of all those suckers in the Razz rounds when playing HORSE?

To learn Razz well you still have to have an interest in the game. After all, you are not going to be good at something if you have little to no interest in something. But if you do have a passion for learning different games or at the very least, if winning is your motivator, then learning to play Razz well WILL give you an advantage over the other players in HORSE.
